The Salt Trade

The trading post sits at the mouth of the river where Norse merchants meet Frankish traders, exchanging furs and amber for silver and salt. Thorstein has made this journey twice a year for a decade, and knows the rhythms of negotiation, the careful dance of valuing goods without showing desperation. But this season, he brings his nephew Haldor, teaching him the craft of trade that requires different skills than raiding, but no less cunning.
